about

'Calling me Home' was Co written by brothers John and Tommy Breen. It was recorded and performed exactly One Hundred and Eleven years after the tragedy happened in September 1910.
The song tells the story of one of Arklows worst fishing tragedies when 6 men, 4 from Arklow, 1 from Wicklow and 1 from Balbriggan lost their lives. Their fishing boat Alice was loaded and homeward bound when she was struck by a steamer named the Melissa just off Kilkeel Co. Down. The song is a tribute to those 6 men and we take time to reflect on ''All those that are lost to the Sea''

lyrics

‘ CALLING ME HOME ’
A Cold Autumn morning the milk bottles shake
The Factory horn heard on the breeze
The Men don the gansey, the boats they are ready
Their fleet is heading to sea
There were seven men on the boat Alice
Five of them from Arklow Town
The fishing was plenty, her hatches all full,
homeward bound from Kilkeel Co. Down
Chorus:
Arklow Arklow you’re calling me home
An tinbhear Mór by the sea
I remember the fishermen mending their nets
As they rolled them out on the South Quay
As they rolled them out on the South Quay

She was broke in two by a Steamer
In September the year Nineteen Ten
The crew on the Melissa they all did their best
In their fight to rescue those men

When word reached Arklow on that very day
Confusion arose who’d survived
The Fishery was numbed by its worst tragedy
When they learned that six men they had died
Instrumental…..

James Lynch and Patrick Doherty
Anthony Kelly and Abraham Kearns
James Waddock and Jeremy Lyndsey
Forever we’ll remember those men
Chorus:
Arklow Arklow you’re calling me home
An tinbhear Mór by the sea
I remember the fishermen mending their nets
As they rolled them out on the South Quay
As they rolled them out on the South Quay

So we’ll sing to all those that are lost to the sea
Send their souls on to fiddlers green
I remember the fishermen mending their nets
As they rolled them out on the South Quay

Chorus:
Arklow Arklow you’re calling me home
An tinbhear Mór by the sea
I remember the fishermen mending their nets
As they rolled them out on the South Quay
As they rolled them out on the South Quay
Instrumental….
Arklow you’re Calling me Home
